How to Prepare for Your Child’s Photography Session

Tips from a Loganville Children’s Photographer (Who’s Also a Mom + “Roro”)

As a mom of three and a proud “Roro” to a spunky one-year-old granddaughter, trust me when I say—I get it. These sessions can be a mix of joy and jitters.

They’re fun because you can’t wait to share all the cuteness of your little humans… but they’re also a tad stressful because, well, little humans are unpredictable. One minute they’re smiling sweetly, the next they’re in full meltdown mode because their sock “feels weird.”

So let’s get into some tips to help you stay sane and make the most of your child’s photography session. And if you’ve been blessed with one of those perfectly chill unicorn children—feel free to jump in and soak up the tips anyway. A little extra advice never hurt... lol.

1. Make It an Adventure

Frame the session as something exciting! Let your child know they get to dress up, smile for the camera, and even help out. I love calling my little clients “Assistant Creative Directors.” It gives them a sense of ownership—and let’s be real, they usually do have strong opinions anyway!

2. Dress for Comfort & Confidence

Choose clothes that look good and feel good. Skip the itchy tags and fussy layers. I recommend soft fabrics in neutral or coordinated tones that let your child’s personality shine.

💡 Bonus tip: Pack a backup outfit—just in case life happens (and it usually does).

3. Snacks & Bribes Welcome Here

Yes, I said bribes. No shame in your snack game. Bring along a small, non-messy treat like crackers or fruit snacks. And maybe promise a post-session ice cream run… It’s a win-win.

4. Let Go of “Perfect”

Your child doesn’t need to be perfect—they just need to be them. We’ll go with the flow and find the magic in the moment. The best photos usually happen in between the “say cheese” poses anyway.

5. Let Me Take the Lead

You don’t have to play photographer and parent at the same time. Step back, breathe, and let me engage your child through play, silly songs, and gentle direction. This is my jam—and I’ve worked with every personality you can imagine!

6. Choose Your Location Wisely (Hint: Avoid the Playground at First!)

If we’re shooting in a park, trust me on this—don’t start near the playground. It’s way more exciting than posing for pictures, and it can be tough to compete with slides and swings. I always recommend parking away from the play area and saving that spot for the end of the session if it’s a scene you’d like included. This small shift has saved so many potential meltdowns.

7. Match the Session Time to Your Needs (and Their Attention Span)

Little ones have short attention spans, so if we’re keeping things simple with one outfit and no family joining in, a mini session is often the perfect fit. But if you’re planning multiple outfit changes or want to include the whole crew, opt for the full hour. That gives us time to reset moods, change outfits, and still capture those beautiful, candid moments

without the rush.

Think of it as allowing space for the magic to unfold—and maybe a snack break in between!

Still a little nervous? That’s totally normal. I’ve got you. Whether your kiddo is shy, spirited, or somewhere in between, we’ll create something beautiful—together.

Show up with love, a snack, and a smile. I’ll handle the rest.
